Adult ABA Services

Behavioral support for adults with autism

ABA therapy for adults focuses on skills that support independent and meaningful living: vocational skills, community participation, relationship skills, self-care, and managing the specific behavioral challenges that arise in adult contexts. Adult ABA may be delivered in the home, community, or workplace setting. While fewer providers specialize in adult services compared to pediatric ABA, the need is significant and growing as more individuals who received early intervention are now reaching adulthood.

Who is this right for?

Adult ABA services are for individuals 18 and older who have an autism diagnosis and who would benefit from behavioral support for specific goals. This includes adults living independently who want to increase their independence or community participation, adults in supported living programs, individuals transitioning from school to work or post-secondary settings, and adults who are experiencing behavioral challenges that affect their quality of life.

What to expect

Adult ABA sessions are highly individualized and goal-directed. A BCBA conducts an initial assessment of the individual's current skills and desired outcomes, then develops a behavior plan addressing those goals. Sessions may occur in a variety of settings. Family members or support staff may be involved in training to support consistent implementation of strategies across settings.

Questions to ask prospective providers

  • 1.Do you have specific experience and training in adult ABA, separate from your pediatric programs?
  • 2.How do you involve the adult themselves in goal setting and program decisions?
  • 3.What settings do you serve adults in (home, community, workplace)?
  • 4.How do you coordinate with supported living staff or other providers if relevant?
  • 5.Is the level of ABA intensity you would recommend appropriate for an adult who also works or attends a day program?
