Telehealth ABA

Remote ABA services via video platform

Telehealth ABA delivers behavioral analysis services through a secure video platform rather than in-person. The format is most commonly used for parent training and caregiver coaching, BCBA supervision and consultation, and social skills groups. Some providers also offer direct one-on-one telehealth sessions for specific skill areas. Telehealth ABA became significantly more prevalent during 2020-2021 and has remained a practical option for families in rural areas, families with transportation challenges, and those who want to supplement in-person services with additional BCBA access.

Who is this right for?

Telehealth ABA is well-suited for parent training and caregiver coaching, for families in rural Colorado or remote areas where in-person providers are scarce, for teenagers and adults who can engage meaningfully through video, and for individuals who need ongoing consultation but do not need intensive in-person services.

What to expect

Telehealth sessions typically happen through a HIPAA-compliant video platform. For parent training sessions, the BCBA observes through the video feed as the parent interacts with their child, providing real-time coaching and feedback. For direct telehealth with older children or teens, sessions may include conversation, role-play, and structured activities the individual can do on their own. You will need a device with a camera and a stable internet connection.

Questions to ask prospective providers

  • 1.Which components of our child's program can be delivered via telehealth versus requiring in-person sessions?
  • 2.What video platform do you use, and how is privacy protected?
  • 3.How do you conduct initial assessments and functional behavior assessments remotely?
  • 4.Is telehealth ABA covered by insurance in Colorado, and does the authorization process differ from in-person?
  • 5.If we start with telehealth and later want to transition to in-person services, how does that work?
