Early Intervention ABA

ABA services for young children, typically under age 6

Early intervention ABA therapy targets children typically between 18 months and 5 years old who have been diagnosed with autism or are showing developmental delays. Research consistently shows that intensive early intervention -- particularly in the first 3-4 years of life when the brain is most plastic -- produces the most significant long-term gains in communication, social skills, and daily living skills. Colorado has a state-funded early intervention program (Birth to Three) that provides services for children under 3, and ABA providers often work alongside or transition families from that program.

Who is this right for?

Early intervention ABA is for families of toddlers and preschoolers who have received an autism diagnosis or who have been identified as having developmental delays in communication, social engagement, or adaptive behavior. The earlier intervention begins, the greater the potential impact on long-term developmental outcomes.

What to expect

Early intervention programs use intensive, play-based approaches to ABA that look very different from traditional discrete trial training. Sessions are naturalistic, following the child's interests and embedding learning opportunities in play and daily routines. Parent involvement is central -- parents are taught to extend therapy techniques throughout the day. Many early intervention providers coordinate directly with Colorado's Birth to Three program and preschool special education teams.

Questions to ask prospective providers

  • 1.Do you use the Early Start Denver Model (ESDM) or another naturalistic early intervention approach?
  • 2.How do you involve parents in sessions and teach them to generalize skills at home?
  • 3.Do you coordinate with Colorado's Birth to Three program or preschool IEP teams?
  • 4.What is the minimum age you serve, and what does a typical week of therapy look like for a 2-year-old?
  • 5.How do you measure progress and adjust the program as my child develops?
