Teen ABA Services

ABA adapted for adolescents and young adults

ABA therapy for teenagers looks significantly different from early childhood ABA. Effective teen programs focus on independence, functional life skills, self-advocacy, vocational preparation, and social navigation in real-world settings rather than intensive discrete trial training. Goals shift toward helping teens manage their own behavior, communicate needs effectively, navigate friendships and school relationships, and prepare for adulthood. Many teen ABA programs incorporate natural environment teaching in community settings rather than clinic rooms.

Who is this right for?

Teen ABA services are appropriate for adolescents (roughly ages 13-21) who may have graduated from intensive early intervention but still benefit from behavioral support, skill-building, and coaching for the specific challenges of adolescence. This includes teens navigating high school, preparing for post-secondary education, learning job skills, or working on independent living skills.

What to expect

Teen sessions are often less structured than early childhood ABA and may happen in the community, school, workplace, or home. A BCBA works with the teen on individually identified goals, which may include things like using public transportation, managing a job application process, regulating emotions during high-stress situations, or practicing interview skills. Parent involvement typically shifts toward coaching rather than hands-on skill practice.

Questions to ask prospective providers

  • 1.How do you involve the teen themselves in setting therapy goals?
  • 2.Do you offer community-based sessions, and what does that look like in practice?
  • 3.How do you approach topics like self-advocacy and self-determination with teens?
  • 4.Do you have experience helping teens transition to post-secondary settings or employment?
  • 5.How does your approach to teens differ from your early childhood programs?
