Diagnostic Assessment

Evaluations for autism diagnosis and treatment planning

Diagnostic assessment for autism involves a comprehensive evaluation by a licensed professional -- typically a psychologist, developmental pediatrician, or neuropsychologist -- to determine whether a child or adult meets criteria for autism spectrum disorder (ASD). A formal diagnosis is typically required before ABA therapy can be authorized by insurance. Assessments may also include functional behavior assessments (FBAs) conducted by a BCBA that evaluate the purpose behind specific behaviors and inform the treatment plan.

Who is this right for?

Diagnostic assessment is the appropriate starting point for any family who suspects their child may have autism or a related developmental difference. It is also relevant for adults who were not diagnosed in childhood but are seeking an evaluation. In the context of ABA therapy, a functional behavior assessment is conducted for individuals who are already in treatment and whose behavioral challenges need a more precise analysis.

What to expect

A diagnostic evaluation typically includes standardized testing, structured observation of the child, caregiver interviews, and review of developmental history. Common assessment tools include the ADOS-2 (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule), the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales, and cognitive testing. Results are summarized in a written report that includes the diagnosis and recommendations. The evaluation typically takes 3-6 hours spread across one or two appointments.

Questions to ask prospective providers

  • 1.What standardized assessment tools do you use, and are they appropriate for my child's age?
  • 2.How long does the evaluation take, and will my child need more than one appointment?
  • 3.Will the report include specific recommendations for treatment, including ABA therapy?
  • 4.Do you provide diagnostic evaluations for adults, and what does that process look like?
  • 5.Is the diagnostic evaluation covered by insurance, and does the ABA coverage require a specific type of evaluator?
