Service Guide
Structured peer interaction with behavioral support
Social skills groups bring together small groups of children or teens with similar social goals in a structured setting where behavioral strategies are used to teach and reinforce social interaction skills. Groups are typically facilitated by a BCBA or trained behavioral specialist and focus on skills such as turn-taking, entering conversations, reading social cues, managing disagreements, and making and keeping friends. Groups provide a unique opportunity to practice social skills with real peers in a supported environment.
Social skills groups are appropriate for children and teens who have mastered basic communication and behavioral foundations but struggle with peer interaction, friendship skills, or navigating group social situations. They are commonly recommended as a complement to individual ABA therapy rather than a replacement.
Groups typically meet once or twice per week for 60-90 minute sessions. Sessions include structured activities, role-playing, and real-time coaching. Group sizes are small -- usually 4-8 participants -- and are often matched by age and skill level. Some providers offer parent components where caregivers learn to support the same social goals at home and in the community.
