Service Guide
Teaching families to reinforce skills at home
Parent training is a component of ABA therapy where the BCBA works directly with parents, caregivers, and family members rather than primarily with the child. The goal is to teach family members the behavioral strategies their child's therapist uses so that those strategies are applied consistently throughout the day -- not just during the therapy session. Research shows that children make faster and more durable progress when parents can support the same goals at home.
Parent training is appropriate for all families receiving ABA services, but it is especially important for families of young children, families where the child's primary challenges occur at home (mealtimes, sleep, tantrums, sibling conflicts), and families who want to reduce their child's total hours of formal therapy over time by building their own capacity to support behavior.
Parent training sessions may happen during your child's therapy time (with you observing and then practicing with coaching) or in separate scheduled sessions. A BCBA will teach you specific strategies for the behaviors targeted in your child's program -- how to prompt, how to reinforce, how to respond to challenging behavior, and how to collect data. You will also learn how to teach new skills using the same methods your child's RBT uses.
