Service Guide
Connecting ABA therapy with school-based services
Many children receiving ABA therapy also receive school-based services through an Individualized Education Program (IEP). School support services from an ABA provider involve the BCBA or a specialist working with the child's school team to align therapy goals, provide consultation to teachers and paraprofessionals, and ensure that behavioral strategies are consistent across home and school settings. This can include attending IEP meetings, conducting school observations, and writing behavioral intervention plans.
School support is most relevant for school-age children who have an IEP and receive both ABA therapy and school-based services. It is especially important when a child exhibits challenging behaviors at school, when school staff need training on behavioral strategies, or when the child's ABA goals overlap significantly with academic or social goals in the IEP.
The BCBA may attend IEP meetings in person or by phone, consult with teachers and special education staff, conduct formal observations at school, and help develop or review behavioral intervention plans. The frequency and intensity of school support varies by provider and by the child's needs.
